County Council candidate Kari McVeigh has stated that she sought the Democrat endorsement in a non-partisan race because she disagrees with the Republicans on a definition of marriage. So, she declines to speak with, or hear the county related concerns of a significant portion of the population even though the county council does not have the power to legislate beliefs.
The first amendment to the Constitution is a wonderful thing. As citizens, we are guaranteed free speech, freedom of the press, the right to peaceful assembly and the right to petition government for grievances.
Because of the First Amendment, Christians, Jews, Buddhists, and Atheists can sit down together to solve civic problems while holding different religious beliefs. In past years through good leadership and dialogue, Democrats and Republicans have worked together to find solutions to shared problems such as housing, transportation, and crime.
McVeigh is applying for a job of county council member that represents all San Juan County citizens and should be concerned with our local county issues, yet she doesn’t want to speak with, hear from, or work with a significant portion of the population.
Good leaders do not deny the First Amendment rights of some citizens.
